As The Special Olympics grows in popularity, measures are being made to facilitate the new audience whom want to watch theses games :
On 1 December 2005, during the team drawing for the most important football (soccer) tournament in South America, the Copa Libertadores, Special Olympics Latin America signed an agreement with the South America Football Confederation (CONMEBOL.). CONMEBOL General Secretary Eduardo De Luca publicly announced the agreement and described Special Olympics and its mission on a live broadcast by FOX Spots television network to millions of people in more than 30 countries in the region.
We do something a bit different this week, since we are coming to the end of the year. Instead of Athlete of the Week, we will show you the Athlete of the Year.
The International Male Athlete of the Year is : Garry Chaplin
This marks the first time in the history of the award that a Special Olympics athlete has won the award.
Chaplin was selected among 4 other nominees including National Cycling Team member Zach Bell and National Cross Country Ski Team member Graham Nishikawa.
In March 2005, Garry Chaplin won a Gold, a Silver and a Bronze medal at the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Nagano, Japan. His accomplishments have earned him local celebrity status in and around Yukon.
After receiving his award from the President of Sport Yukon, George Arcand, Chaplin thanked all the people who helped him and supported him along the road to his success.
Didnt see that coming. I am glad that they did.
I am assuming that Farrelly brothers knew where to go and where not to go.
A little information about The Ringer for those who don’t know:
This comedy is about two guys who decide to rig the Special Olympics to pay off a debt by having one of them, Steve (Knoxville), pose as a contestant in the games, hoping to dethrone reigning champion, Jimmy. Mentally-challenged high jinks and hilarity surely follow.
To put things in perspective, During South Park 8th Season, they had an eposide where Cartman enters the Special Olympics to try and finally win something. Click Here For More Episode Information : The eposide, as most South Park Eposides Make it very funny, but no prestige funny, just plain old funny plus there is also a moral to the episode. This the approach that I see the Farrelly brothers taking. So I am glad to see that the Special Olympics approves.
Be sure, to come back here after the movie is realased ( 23rd )for a Full Review.
In Beijing, Special Olympics Global Torch Bearer and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined hundreds of Special Olympics athletes on 13 November 2005 at a event to celebrate the growth of Special Olympics in China, and to focus world attention on the upcoming Special Olympics World Summer Games, to be held in Shanghai in 2007.
